Juniors stage great comeback to force draw

Sarsfields 2-7, HWH-Bunclody 1-10:

Jack Ennis struck an injury-time leveller from a free to give Sarsfields a share of the spoils with HWH-Bunclody in this Roban Financial and Mortgages Junior 'C' football championship Group 1 game in rain-lashed Bree on Sunday last.

The persistence of the town team eventually paid off after a number of earlier chances had gone astray. HWH-Bunclody had first use of the elements but fell behind by 1-2 to 0-3 after 15 minutes when Francis Dempsey punished a goalkeeping error with a side-footed goal. However, the Carlow border crew responded in fine fashion by hitting 1-5 without reply before the break, with a perceptive Denis Finn pass setting up veteran Mickey Connors for the goal in the 23rd minute.

Minor midfielder Jason Somers widened their lead to 1-9 to 1-2 from a free on the re-start, and Thomas Connors then made up for that earlier mistake when he saved a Jack Ennis penalty.
Sarsfields were back in business though when Kevin Carty toe-poked a Francis Dempsey '45 to the net in the 34th minute. While they found scores hard to come by, the same player finally levelled before a late exchange of pointed frees between Jason Somers and Jack Ennis meant that everyone went home with something to show for their efforts.
