Sarsfields U10's Clinch Centenary
Silverware
Sarsfields 6-4, Crossabeg/Ballymurn 4-2:
IT WAS left to the youngest players in the club to provide
some success for Sarsfields G.F.C. in their centenary year
as they recorded an exciting 6-4 to 4-2 win over
Crossabeg-Ballymurn in the Martin Bergin Memorial Shield
final in Páirc Charman on Sunday week last.
This talented Under-10 team brought great joy to their
parents, supporters and dedicated mentors Alan Keeling, Jim
Crowley and Ian Donohoe as they came back from a one-point
interval deficit to clinch the title.
Their sole prior success in this competition was in 2003,
but a stylish side captained by the talented Jack Murphy -
grandson of Jim Crowley - played a fine brand of football
before a big crowd.
The Martin Bergin Shield is the second division of the
Sarsfields club’s annual Under-10 tournament which has been
running without a break since 1994. The main final for the
Brendan Redmond Memorial Cup between Starlights and Glynn-Barntown
was postponed as a mark of respect to the late Michael Foley
and will be re-fixed over the coming weeks. Two extra
competitions were included to mark the club’s 100th
anniversary, with Shelmaliers pipping Oylegate-Glenbrien by
1-4 to 1-3 in the Centenary Cup final while Blackwater beat
St. Anne’s by 2-8 to 0-5 in the Centenary Shield decider.
Goals galore marked the first-half of the Martin Bergin
Shield final, with Crossabeg-Ballymurn - appearing in their
fourth successive decider - leading by 3-1 to 3-0 at the
break thanks to a hat-trick from Oisín Foley. Stephen
Kearney had fired in two goals for Sarsfields, and when he
added a third on the re-start they were on their way. Nippy
corner-forward Jack Haughton went on to hit the net twice as
well, deflecting an Eoin Doyle shot home for the clincher in
an exciting game.
The formal presentation of the Martin Bergin Shield was made
by two of his grandchildren, Shane Bergin and Nick Jones, to
Jack Murphy who made a fine speech. John Redmond, whose late
son, Brendan, is commemorated by the annual tournament, was
also among the attendance.
