Sarsfields 1-15, Shelmaliers 1-8:

Sarsfields built impressively upon their first round win over Volunteers when they had seven points to spare over Shelmaliers in this Roban Financial and Mortgages Junior 'C' football championship Group B game in Hollymount on Monday last.

The usual combination of youth and experience at this level produced a successful formula as the town team always enjoyed an edge in the second-half after leading by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break. Team captain Paul Harrington had been unerring in his accuracy from frees with four fine efforts, while Philip Carley, Seán Ó Corcora and John Harrington also hit the target.

However, the key moment before the interval came in the 24th minute when Kevin Carty hauled down Stephen Cash but then picked himself up to save his resultant penalty. Sarsfields only led by 0-4 to 0-3 at the time, and in effect this created a six-point swing as they added three unanswered scores before half-time.

It was 0-11 to 0-4 ten minutes into the second period, with John Cummins (two), Paul Harrington (free) and Peter Grannell all adding to the leaders¹ tally while Liam Howlin and substitute Colm Callery defended solidly. The closest Shelmaliers managed to get was six points on two occasions, with Shane Murphy and Stephen Cash carrying most of their threat up front. However, a fine overall team display was crowned by Sarsfields in the 57th minute when the Gannon brothers, Stephen and Paul, combined to put Peter Grannell, now at corner-forward, through for a goal. While David Kenny did manage a late consolation major for the Shels thirds, they now have a very tough task on their hands to make progress in this group.

Sarsfields 2-7, Volunteers 2-5:

Sarsfields secured the town bragging rights in Wexford Park on Saturday last when they hit 2-1 without reply in the last ten minutes to deny keen rivals Volunteers in this Roban Financial and Mortgages Junior 'C'  football championship Group B opener.

The John Street side held a 2-5 to 0-6 lead when midfielder Seán Walsh was dismissed on a second yellow card in the 49th minute, and the Carrigeen crew made the most of their numerical advantage as they proceeded to land the winning scores. Remarkably, Dylan Sparrow's point with nine minutes left was their first time to register from play, and even better was to follow midway through the last quarter when a cross-cum-shot by the same player from the right wing ended up in the net via the far post (2-5 to 1-7). The Vols nearly hit back when Jeff Nolan bore down on goal but overcarried, although his kick as the whistle was blown was saved anyway by Kevin Carty. Sparrow turned from scorer to provider for the winning Sarsfields goal in the 58th minute, as his run split the defence before Philip Carley¹s kick took a deflection en route to the corner of the net.

A remarkable feature of the first-half was that none of the forwards on view got a score from play between them. Accurate free-taker Paul Harrington accounted for all five Sarsfields points from frees, but they fell behind to a soft goal with the second-last kick of the half. Donal O'Connor¹s 25-metre free off the ground ended up in the top right-hand corner of the Clonard end net, and the Vols moved into a 1-3 to 0-5 lead as a result. Those three points had come from their midfielders, with Seán Walsh¹s fourth-minute effort supplemented by scores from Jeff Nolan near the end of the first and second quarters respectively.

Sarsfields were still trying to come to terms with that goal when they were found wanting at the back once more less than three minutes into the new half. This time a Seán Walsh delivery went through a defender's hands, and his older brother, Anthony, was on hand to guide the ball home (2-3 to 0-5). Donal O¹Connor added points from a '45 and from play on either side of another Paul Harrington free, but Sarsfields started going for goals midway through the second-half and found a Vols defence led by Stephen Burke in a determined mood. However, once the space opened up after Seán Walsh¹s dismissal, the Butters launched that late surge to claim the points.

Sarsfields: Kevin Carty; David Murphy, Colm Callery, Killian Lawlor; Liam Howlin, Seán Ó Corcora, Tadhg Carley; David Clancy, Paul Gannon; Philip Carley (1-0), John Harrington, Dylan Sparrow (1-1); Adrian Campbell, Paul Harrington (capt., 0-6 frees), Stephen Gannon. Subs. - Brian Furlong for Campbell, Rory Carty for Murphy.
Volunteers: Eoin McCarthy; Ross McDermott, Stephen Burke, Billy Doran; Brendan Curran, Barry Hennessy, Ciarán O¹Shea; Jeff Nolan (0-2), Seán Walsh (0-1); Gerry Heanue, Paddy Booth, P.J. Mooney; Donal O¹Connor (1-2, 1-0 free, 0-1 ¹45), Anthony Walsh (capt., 1-0), Ciarán Hore. Subs. - Jimmy Maher for Curran, inj., Ciarán Hillery for Booth.
