A goal mid-way through the first half by Lee Walker was the
critical score in this often tempestuous WFC 'B' quarter-final in
Monomolin on Sunday afternoon.
With both sides determined not to be dragged down into the
relegation dog-fight, tough tackling and robust challenges were the
order of the day. Indeed it was this aspect of the game rather than
poor shooting which kept the scoreline down.
The Sarsfields led by 1-3 to 0-4 at half-time, but on the
resumption it was Castletown who took the initiative and kicked over
three unanswered points and with ten minutes remaining, they led by
the minimum. It was at this stage however, that the Wexford town
team showed their mettle and a great score from a free out near the
sideline by Barry Goff brought them back level. Two further points
were added and try as they might, Castletown could not find there
way past a resolute Sarsfields defence, and after a tense 6 minutes
of injury time, referee Ian Plunkett blew the whistle to shouts of
joy from the Wexford town players and supporters.
Each and every one of the Sarsfields players can hold their heads
high after this performance. From the defensive line where Enda
Whelan and Fran Cleary were immense through to the forward line
where Jason Murphy and Lee Walker caused problems to the Castletown
backline all day. They were ably supported by a dominant midfield
pairing of Barry Goff and Ciaran O'Leary.
With the threat of relegation now gone, this team can concentrate
on progressing in the 'B' championship safe in the knowledge that
their Senior status of 29 years is secured once more.
