Senior team who defeated Glynn/Barntown in the second round of the WFC Senior Football Championship

Gutsy display sees Seniors overcome Glynn/Barntown

Despite conceding 2 second half goals at crucial stages, our Senior team showed tremendous spirit to dig out a 2 point win over Wexford District rivals Glynn/Barntown on Saturday last in Wexford Park on a 2-10 to 2-8 scoreline.

As with the first round match against the Starlights, injury and unavailability meant that the team were without a number of key players but the strength of this panel meant that those players who started the game were well up to the challenge.

The stifling heat meant that playing conditions were extremely difficult for the players but, having found themeselves with an extra player after the early sending off of the Barntown corner back, we went into a 1-2 to 0-2 lead after a great goal from Barry Goff. However, Colin Bent then received a red card and, with numerical equality restored, the Glynn men fought back to leave them ahead by a single point at half-time on a 0-6 to 1-2 scoreline.

The second half couldn't have got off to a worse start for our lads with the concession of a goal and a point within minutes of the restart. However, the introduction of Dermot Foley and Colm Callery gave the team a new impetus and we fought back to tie the game at 1-8 a piece with 15 minutes to go. The Glynn men had other ideas though, and poor defensive play let them in for a second goal and the tide seemed to be turning in their favour. Indeed, they could have sealed the game but a half hit shot across the goal came off the post where Enda Whelan was on hand to clear the ball upfield from which we scored a great point. Instead of being 6 points down we were now only 2 points behind and when substitute John Foley goaled to put us a point up, the impetus was most definately with us and we went on to add an insurance point just before the end to clinch victory.

This was by no means a classic performance and there were a lot of basic errors made in the game, but the heart and belief within this team shone through and extended our season long unbeaten run to 9 games while also putting us in the draw for this years qurter-final of the Senior Championship.

Team: James Roice; Brendan Mulligan; Paul Harrington; Enda Whelan; Mikey Hanrahan, Colin Bent; Niall Shiel; John Harrington; Donnacha Doyle; David Gannon, Barry Goff, Emmet Keeling; Jason Murphy, Ciaran O'Leary, Philly Cullen. Subs. - Colm Callery for Gannon; Dermot Foley for Doyle; John Foley for Cullen.
