Presentation to Jim Crowley at Wexford
District Awards
Jim Crowley has been a stalwart servant of the Sarsfields
since their
re-formation in 1951, and he is worth his weight in gold
to the club. A
stylish and determined player in his younger days, Jim's
talents were
recognised by the county selectors and he lined out with
Wexford at Minor, Junior and Senior level. He was carrying
on a proud family tradition in the process as his father,
Jack, was a member of the all-conquering Wexford Senior
football squad of the 1915-'18 era. |
Sarsfields quickly went from
strength to strength in the 1950s, and this was due in
no small measure to the outstanding exploits of Jim and
his brothers. He was joined on many successful teams by
three more of the Crowley clan - the late Pete; John,
better known as 'Hoy'; and the late Martin, or 'Murks'
to his many friends. The highlights of Jim's playing career
were the Senior championship medals won in 1961 and '67
at the expense of Starlights and Castletown respectively.
He also had the distinction of claiming county titles
in the Minor, Junior, Special Junior and Intermediate
grades.
Off the field he has been a diligent worker for the
club in a host of different capacities. A selector at
every level, he was part of the backroom team when Sarsfields
last tasted Senior championship success in 1984. Nine
years later he was a mentor once more when they were pipped
in the final replay by Kilanerin, and he was a selector
with the Premier championship-winning Under-14 team of
2002. Jim served as club Treasurer for twenty years before
stepping down from the position in 2003, and he was also
the main driving force behind the development of the fine
facilities in Páirc Charman.
His family have all made immense contributions to the
Sarsfields, none more so than his wife, Liz, who served
with him as joint Treasurer for a long time and who still
carries out so many vital functions behind the scenes. In
addition, his sons Martin and Kevin and his daughter Carmel
played with the club at various levels, while another
daughter, Jackie, shared in a number of Sarsfields Scór
successes during the 1980s.
Whenever something needs to be done in the Sarsfields
club, you can be sure that Jim Crowley will be the first
to volunteer his services. His devotion to the 'Butters'
was recognised before in 1988 when he won the 'Ciba Geigy'
Clubman of the Year award for Wexford, and his loyalty
has never wavered. Sarsfields have been blessed with many
great clubmen down through the years, and Jim ranks among
the very best. A thorough gentleman, his club colleagues
congratulate him on this honour and look forward to working
closely with him for many years to come.
