Mikey Hanrahan Wins 2003 Footballer of the Year

The 'Footballer of the Year' is a shining example of the old adage that 'practice makes perfect'. An extremely dedicated and determined player, he has made enormous strides coming up through the ranks since his Under-12 days. All of the hard work paid off in 2003 when he was selected on an inter-county team for the first time, while he also

broke into his club's Senior side and was their most consistent defender throughout the championship. Our award winner had his first taste of success in 1996 when he helped his club to the Under-12 Roinn 2 county title. He added an Under-12 Roinn 1 medal the following year, and was a member of the team which lost the Under-14 Premier final in 1999. In 2001 he captained the club's Juvenile team to the Premier championship semi-final and won a District Roinn 2 Minor medal. The following year he played an outstanding role in securing the Jim Byrne Cup title for the first time in 34 years, and also made his debut with the club's Junior 'A' team. The crowning glory of his under-age career came last year when his sustained excellence was recognised by the county Minor selectors. And while the team bowed out in the first round of the championship, our award winner was one of the most impressive performers in the full-back position against Kildare. He divided his duties between left half-back and left corner-back with his club in the Senior championship, and is destined to become a household name over the coming years. The Wexford Creamery-Bord na nÓg Loch Garman 'Footballer of the Year' for 2003 is MICHAEL HANRAHAN of Sarsfields.
